WCAG 2.4.4: Link Purpose (In Context)

WCAG 2.4.4 Link Purpose (In Context) is a level A success criterion from WCAG 2.0. The purpose of each link should be clear from the link text, or from the link text plus its context, such as the surrounding sentence or list item.

Screen-reader users often pull up a list of links. Click here is useless there if the context is not included.

How to test

Read each link out of the page. If the text is vague, check that the surrounding heading or sentence makes the destination clear.

How to fix

Write link text that names the destination. Prefer that even when context exists.

Example that fails

A column of links all say Read more, and they are not in a list that includes the article name inside the link.

Example that passes the check

The link says Read the postage guide.

Shopify

Edit buttons in sections so they name the collection or page, not Shop now repeated with no nearby name inside the link.

WooCommerce

Product links in loops should include the product name, not only a photo with empty alt.

WordPress

Replace read more with the post title inside the link.

Wix

Edit button labels so they name the page they open.
