Fix file names used as alt text
Alt text that is a file name, such as banner.jpg, does not describe the image.
Screen readers announce the file name instead of the product.
Steps
- Search alt values that end in png, jpg, svg or webp.
- Replace them with a description.
- Stop the upload tool copying the file name into alt.
Failing example
alt equals hero-final.jpg.
Better example
alt describes the product.
Shopify
Shopify often copies the file name into alt on upload. Edit the product media alt and any theme image that still uses the file name.
WooCommerce
In the Media Library, replace file-name alts and re-save the WooCommerce product.
WordPress
Edit the attachment alt in WordPress so it is not the upload name.
Wix
In Wix image settings, replace the file name in the alt field.
