WCAG 2.2.6: Timeouts
WCAG 2.2.6 Timeouts is a level AAA success criterion from WCAG 2.1. People are warned about any timeout that could cause data loss, unless the data is preserved for more than 20 hours.
People need to know a long form may be cleared if they leave it.
How to test
Look for a notice on long forms about how long the data is kept.
How to fix
Tell people at the start how long they have, or keep the data.
Example that fails
An application form expires silently after 15 minutes.
Example that passes the check
The form says data is kept until the person submits or for 24 hours.
Shopify
If a wholesale form app times out, show that limit in the section text.
WooCommerce
State the hold time next to long checkout notes.
WordPress
Add a note above long forms.
Wix
Add a text line above long forms stating how long entries are kept.
