WCAG 2.2.1: Timing Adjustable
WCAG 2.2.1 Timing Adjustable is a level A success criterion from WCAG 2.0. If a time limit is set, people need a way to turn it off, adjust it, or extend it, unless the limit is essential.
People who need longer to read or type get logged out or lose a reservation.
How to test
Leave checkout idle. If a timer appears, confirm you can extend it before it expires.
How to fix
Warn before the timeout and offer more time.
Example that fails
The checkout clears the basket after two minutes with no warning.
Example that passes the check
A warning offers Extend time.
Shopify
Do not add a custom timer that clears the cart. Shopify's own session handling should not be shortened by theme script.
WooCommerce
Remove idle scripts that empty the cart without a warning.
WordPress
Session plugins should warn and offer an extension.
Wix
Do not add a countdown that ends the form without a way to extend it.
