WCAG 1.4.3: Contrast (Minimum)
WCAG 1.4.3 Contrast (Minimum) is a level AA success criterion from WCAG 2.0. Normal text needs a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 against its background. Large text needs at least 3:1. This is about reading the words, including prices and buttons.
People with low vision, and anyone in bright sun, cannot read pale grey on white.
How to test
Measure text colour against the immediate background with a contrast checker. Include sale prices, placeholders and text on images.
How to fix
Darken the text or lighten the background until the ratio clears the threshold.
Example that fails
A £48 price in #c5c5c5 on a white card.
Example that passes the check
The price is #1a1714 on white.
Shopify
In the theme editor Colors, darken text, sale prices and button labels. Check the announcement bar separately.
WooCommerce
Update the customizer colours for body text, prices and the sale badge.
WordPress
Change the palette in theme.json or the block colour so body text is not the lightest grey.
Wix
Select the text and pick a darker colour. Put a solid strip behind text that sits on a photo.
