WCAG 1.2.5: Audio Description (Prerecorded)

WCAG 1.2.5 Audio Description (Prerecorded) is a level AA success criterion from WCAG 2.0. Prerecorded video needs an audio description of important visuals. A text alternative alone is not enough at this level.

Blind viewers need the visuals in the soundtrack, not only in a separate document they may never find.

How to test

Confirm the player offers an audio-description track, or that the main soundtrack already describes the visuals.

How to fix

Record a description track and add it in the video host, or edit the main narration so it includes the visuals.

Example that fails

A lookbook video pans across outfits with music and no description.

Example that passes the check

A description track names each outfit as it appears.

Shopify

Add the description track in the video host used by the theme section, and label the control Audio description.

WooCommerce

Upload the description track beside the product video and name it in the player.

WordPress

Add a second track on the Video block or switch the embed to the described version.

Wix

Replace the video with the described cut if Wix video cannot hold a second track.
